The continuing controversial revelations regarding MPs expense claims underlines some fundamental problems with the current system:
1. MPs should be subject to the same taxation model as the rest of the population, ie allowable Expenses should be wholly and necessairly incurred as a result of official duties.
2. The penalties for breach of guidelines should be as punatuive as would be the case in the private sector. I’d suggest loss of office.
3. MPs salaries should be significantly increased to bring them into line with the private sector and the allowances system should be radically scaled back or preferably abolished.
